If anyone decides to take a look at t his blog, here’s what’s happening with future projects: They are still in the ‘formative stages’. Last week a free lance writer stopped by as she is writing an article on ‘library art’ and was duly impressed by the mural. I look forward to seeing some note of the mural in the Barntable paper in the near future. Our artists? Well, they are in college (Maddie, Sheila, Brad & Greg) or back at SHS (Nicolette, Nikki, Spencer, Delaney) and still are making an impression wherever they are. So, this note just says…hopefully, SHS art endeavors will again bless the library walls, nooks & crannies some way. Until then, remember: I PAINT, THEREFORE I ART.

Though there are some details to brush up on the mural (like Maddie’s misspelled name, sorry), the Mural Project is finished. I am very enthusiastic about continuing the Library’s collaboration with SHS students to produce art, objects or programming. One idea is already forming in the brain…something to do with cod, yes cod. Congratulations to the seniors and have a superior new adventure. To those left behind (for the time being) I hope we can work together on another great project that makes at least a bit of difference in how people look at youth and their part in the community. Thanks for everything. Kathy Johnson YA Librarian SPL

The images are meant to provoke thought, be fun to look at and take you places that only imagination and art can. Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see you on Thursday, May 14 at 5 pm for the Mural Opening.

Gathering three of the finest SHS NAHS vols, Jackie, Mr. Rigazio and myself, the final paint began Monday night. Thanks to Pat Vineis for ‘opening the doors’ to our painters. JUST ANNOUNCED!!! Jackie and paint partner Chris Reverdy will be in the building Saturday, April 25th from Noon to 3 pm for LIVE ACTION MURAL PAINTING. Feel free to stop by, comment or maybe even add a touch of paint to the mural. SHS students may be on hand as well. There is A LOT of volunteer time that has gone into the mural from our SHS students and from Jackie Reeves, Lead Muralist. Amazingly generous.
Here’s a few photos from the evening’s brush.

Recently John Houston, author & artist, and wife, Winnie Fitch, author and artist moved out of ‘Hedgerow’ to live with their son in Oregon. Because of Winnie’s health and the move was thought best. This library and town have so much to thank the Houstons for, the least of which are the lovely murals of their work and also representations of Thornton Burgess book characters that grace our Children’s Room and downstairs kitchen. Please take a moment to look up at Nessie, Michael, Vicious Fishious, Raccoon, Skunk, the ‘Balloon Bunnies’ and if you are ever in the kitchen downstairs, the ‘Pumpkin Tree.’ Children are always looking up at things since, let’s face it, they’re usually shorter than adults or teens, and we never hear from kids, “When did that mural get painted? I’ve never seen it.” Another reason it’s cool being little, you tend to look up a lot and see things adults just don’t notice for one reason or another. So, look to your left at the photos….and be sure to look up the next time you are in the Children’s Room. A silent thank you to Winnie & John would be nice, too.

On the wall, not the fence...

Nicolette & Jackie 'walk the walk'
That may not be true with artists, but a true MERCI’ to Brad & Greg Bailey, Richard Neal, Nicolette Bovat, Sheila Greetham, Chris Reverdy and, of course, starring JACKIE REEVES, to GETTING THE MURAL CANVAS ON THE WALL! This big step leads us on to the next. Photos prove that every artist needs to know how to use ‘goop’, every artist can walk on staging to get to where they need to go, and every artist does what it takes to get the job job. We will rest for awhile (but not Jackie who has teaching & an art show to prepare for) on the mural (Our NAHS never rest either, I know.) until around April 10th. I have some practical details to work on and Jackie will be designing the final paint-up of the first down the stairs wall so the wall mural can be completed. Kudos to all of you who made it a point to share your quality time with the project. Final opening celebration should be around the week before spring vacation. Lookin’ good….stop by to see the mural.
