A GOOD-BY TO THE ORIGINAL MURALISTS…

Recently John Houston, author & artist, and wife, Winnie Fitch, author and artist moved out of ‘Hedgerow’ to live with their son in Oregon.  Because of Winnie’s health and the move was thought best.  This library and town have so much to thank the Houstons for, the least of which are the lovely murals of their work and also representations of Thornton Burgess book characters that grace our Children’s Room and downstairs kitchen.   Please take a moment to look up at Nessie, Michael, Vicious Fishious, Raccoon, Skunk, the ‘Balloon Bunnies’ and if you are ever in the kitchen downstairs, the ‘Pumpkin Tree.’  Children are always looking up at things since, let’s face it, they’re usually shorter than adults or teens, and we never hear from  kids, “When did that mural get painted?  I’ve never seen it.” Another reason it’s cool being little, you tend to look up a lot and see things adults just don’t notice for one reason or another.  So, look to your left at the photos….and be sure to look up the next time you are in the Children’s Room.  A silent thank you to Winnie & John would be nice, too.

Nicolette & Jackie 'walk the walk'

Nicolette & Jackie 'walk the walk'

That may not be true with artists, but a true MERCI’ to Brad & Greg Bailey, Richard Neal, Nicolette Bovat, Sheila Greetham, Chris Reverdy  and, of course, starring JACKIE REEVES, to GETTING THE MURAL CANVAS ON THE WALL!  This big step leads us on to the next.  Photos prove that every artist needs to know how to use ‘goop’, every artist can walk on staging to get to where they need to go, and every artist does what it takes to get the job job.  We will rest for awhile (but not Jackie who has teaching & an art show to prepare for) on the mural (Our NAHS never rest either, I know.) until around April 10th.  I have some practical details to work on and Jackie will be designing the final paint-up of the first down the stairs wall so the wall mural can be completed.  Kudos  to all of you who made it a point to share your quality time with the project.  Final opening celebration should be around the week before spring vacation.  Lookin’ good….stop by to see the mural.

Dude, who stole my mural?

Life After Mural (until the next one)

Life After Mural (until the next one)

Arriving Friday, Feb. 27, around Noon I found Jackie & Chris finally sitting down, looking just a little worn.  The wall was pristine white – sans mural.  Our mural lay rolled up on the floor waiting for its next great adventure at the library.  Thanks to all of you who made that effort to finish up to the best of our ability this canvas part.  It really was amazing the way all worked together.  So, the mural is still a work in progress perhaps, but it IS something that will show the remarkable effort and talent you students have and Jackie’s amazing contributions of guidance and hands on touches.  The next step?  Well, it’s putting the canvas up, laying down the base for the wall painting, painting the scene that morphs into the mural panel and figuring out how to throw an OPENING PARTY.  Still much to do.  In the meantime, please tell parents, friends about this and prime them for the opening sometime in March or early April.  Until then, I know you just can’t wait for the emails from me.  More photos on the flickr widget.  TTFN.
